At the edge of the Western Continent lies the kingdom of Renalia, a land scarred by war and rebellion. Divided into four provinces, Renalia is ruled over by a king; however, some whisper that it is the Church of Mitra that truly rules over the hearts and minds of the Renalian people.
Renalia is recovering from a brutal, protracted Forty Years’ War with the neighboring kingdom of Jad; however, the land still bears the scars of conflict. Commissioned soldiers and mercenaries were denied pay, leaving them disgruntled and impoverished. A rebellion has fermented in the East, seeking to overthrow the King.
But in the halls of capital city Nerubia, an equally deadly game brews. The King’s health is failing, and not even the most powerful of magics can sustain him – he is expected to die within the year. Two contenders now stand in line for his throne; the king's brother Duke Berugia and the Queen's son the Crown Prince, with the latter being supported by his uncle Duke Absteme.
All the while, the Church of Mitra sits neutral, refusing to lend its powerful hand to one side or the other. Noble houses and powerful bishops lie scheming, each one thirsty for more power and prestige. Monsters roam the land, terrorizing common folk. Rebels sharpen their knives as the monarchy grows weaker.
Business is booming.
